Understanding Bipolar Disorder 

What is Bipolar Disorder? Key concepts that support a clinical understanding of the diagnosis and lived experience of Bipolar.

• Assessment and Case Formulation 

Completing clinical assessment and developing a collaborative formulation of clients’ mood experiences and their impact on daily life.

Working with Bipolar Disorder 
Core principles for psychological intervention across mood states.

• NICE-Recommended Interventions:
An overview of current NICE guidance for bipolar disorder and how to apply these recommendations in day-to-day clinical practice, including psychoeducation, family intervention and medication.

• Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Bipolar Disorder (ACT-BD)
  Values-based approaches and psychological flexibility across mood states.

• Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT) 
Stabilising routines, interpersonal functioning, and rhythm regulation.

• Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Bipolar Disorder (CBT-BD) 

Supporting clients to recognise cognitive and behavioural patterns that affect mood. Helping clients understand and navigate mood shifts with greater awareness and agency. Application of behavioural activity scheduling, behavioural experiments and cognitive restructuring. 

• Staying Well & Relapse Prevention Planning

Collaborative strategies for longterm stability, including recognition and management of early warning signs, and developing personalised wellness plan.

MEET YOUR TRAINERS

Dr. Penny Harrington
Clinical Psychologist

Penny is a Clinical Psychologist with both clinical and research experience of working with Bipolar Disorder. She has worked across NHS secondary care and private practice, including within Early Intervention Services for people experiencing psychosis and bipolar presentations with psychotic features.

She has also completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Applications of CBT for Psychosis & Bipolar Disorder. Her work has involved providing assessment, formulation, and evidence‑based psychological interventions with individuals experiencing a wide range of mental health difficulties.

Alongside her clinical practice, Penny provides training to mental health practitioners. She is committed to equipping clinicians with the knowledge and skills they need to confidently and effectively support clients living with Bipolar Disorder.

Alice Fiorica
Psychologist & Therapist


Alice is a Psychologist, CBT Therapist, ACT Therapist and a Mindfulness teacher with over 20 years of experience in working both privately and for the National Health Service.

She is the founder of The Crossroads Psychology, a clinic that works in London and Online.

She firmly believes in the power of Psycho-education and in giving everyone the psychological tools they need to live a fulfilling life.

She specializes in anxiety disorders, stress management & perfectionism as well as

in the treatment of depression & bipolar disorder.
